Some of the information may be outdated (for example, some images may be missing, and some links may not work anymore). Check out the [update on publication pages](https://support.google.com/news/publisher-center/answer/14859160).\n\nFriday, July 16, 2021\n\n\nAt Google, we want to help everyone understand the world by connecting people with relevant and authoritative news\nfrom a variety of trusted publishers. Today, we're answering some common questions we've heard from publishers to\nhelp them better understand how news appears on Google News and Google Search.\n\nWhere does news appear on Google?\n---------------------------------\n\n\nNews content can appear on [several different Google products](https://newsinitiative.withgoogle.com/hownewsworks/products/), including\nGoogle News, Google Search, Google Assistant, YouTube, and Discover. For the purposes of this post, we'll focus on Google News and the\n[News surfaces](https://support.google.com/news/publisher-center/answer/9607026) within Google Search, since most\npublisher questions pertain to these products.\n\n\n[Google News](https://news.google.com/about/) (which comprises the\nGoogle News iOS and Android apps, as well as [news.google.com](https://news.google.com/)) includes a diverse set of features that help people\nfind links to the latest news, along with the ability to follow specific topics and news sources. For example, the \"For you\" feed contains news\nstories based [on your interests](https://support.google.com/googlenews/answer/9005601), while the Headlines section within the\napp surfaces fresh, newsworthy stories for all users in a particular region. People can also search within Google News to find links to content.\n\n\nGoogle Search can show links to news content in web results, but Search also contains two news-specific surfaces. The Top stories carousel often\nappears at the top of Search results to highlight relevant news stories when people search for information on a timely topic like a recent sports\ngame or the latest scientific breakthrough. Navigating to the News tab in Search helps people narrow their search results to focus on news-related\nresults, which can help provide broader context for something in the news.\n\nIs my site eligible to appear in these places?\n----------------------------------------------\n\n\nYour site is automatically considered for Google News and news surfaces in Search---no application required. You just need to produce relevant\ncontent that's identified as:\n\n- Having high levels of [expertise, authority, and trustworthiness](/search/blog/2019/08/core-updates).\n- Having a consistent history of producing original news-related content.\n- Complying with our [News policies](https://support.google.com/news/publisher-center/answer/6204050).\n\n\nWhile we previously had an application process to appear in these news products, this process was retired nearly two years ago when we\n[launched](/search/blog/2019/12/google-publisher-center) Publisher Center in December 2019.\nThis change allowed us to identify more eligible news content across the entire web, including from sites perhaps overlooked\nin the past, because they didn't know they needed to apply.\n\n\nThe eligibility details here only apply to Google News, Top stories, and the News tab in Search.\nThese details don't apply or impact the ability to appear in web results in Google Search. Learn more about\nhow to [Get your website on Google](/search/docs/fundamentals/get-on-google).\n\nHow do I know if my site is appearing?\n--------------------------------------\n\n\nIt's best to look at the performance reports on Search Console for [Google News](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/10083653)\nand [Google Search](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/7576553) (filtered to the News search type) in Search Console.\nThese reports indicate if your site is receiving traffic from Google News and news surfaces within Google Search. If so, you know that your content\nis eligible and relevant to appear. For more information about how to track performance, learn\nhow to [Measure\nthe impact of Google News](https://support.google.com/news/publisher-center/answer/9603442).\n| **Note** : While you can use the `site:` search query on Google News or the News tab on Search to see if those pages are indexed, it doesn't mean that those pages are eligible to appear for news searches.\n\nIs there anything I can do to improve my visibility?\n----------------------------------------------------\n\n\nYour site is automatically considered for Google News and news surfaces in Search---no application required. Once our systems\nidentify content that is eligible to appear, its ranking is [determined\nautomatically](https://support.google.com/news/publisher-center/answer/9606702) by a variety of factors, including relevance of content, prominence, authoritativeness, freshness, location, and language.\n\n\nYou can use the [Publisher Center](https://support.google.com/news/publisher-center/answer/9606538) to define certain details\nabout your site---RSS feeds, website URLs, videos and more---that can help manage your brand and make it easier for Google to index\nyour site. The Publisher Center can also be used to create a \"News source\" page for publications, if you don't already have one.\nThis page allows Google News users -- if they choose -- to [follow](https://support.google.com/googlenews/answer/9010862#zippy=%2Cfollow-an-interest)\nthe publication and see its latest content.\n\n\nWhile the Publisher Center can help you manage content that's deemed eligible, eligibility itself is determined through the automated\nprocess. Given this, being [approved](https://support.google.com/news/publisher-center/answer/9547901) to\nuse the Publisher Center, submitting content through it or having a News source page does not mean content will appear in:\n\n- Search results at Google News\n- Google News features like \"For you\" or Headlines\n- News surfaces in Search such as Top stories or the News tab\n\n\nIf you don't want your content to appear in Google News, you can [block access](https://support.google.com/news/publisher-center/answer/9605477) to it without affecting your continued indexing and ranking in Google Search.\n\nI'm following all your advice. Why am I still not appearing?\n------------------------------------------------------------\n\n\nMake sure you're regularly producing original news content and are high in expertise, authoritativeness, and\ntrustworthiness (our [blog post about core updates](/search/blog/2019/08/core-updates) has useful advice on this).\nOur systems run regularly and will automatically detect if a site has risen to better meet the criteria.\n\n\nNo system is perfect, and we're always looking at ways to improve our automated system. But since\nretiring our application process nearly two years ago, the current automated system has enabled\nthousands of new publishers---from national brands to emerging local publications---to receive visitors\nfrom Google News and news surfaces in Search.\n\n\nWe also encourage anyone to visit\nour [How news works on Google](https://newsinitiative.withgoogle.com/hownewsworks/mission/) site for\nmore information.\n\nPosted by Danny Sullivan, public liaison for Google Search"]]
