With Google Earth you can find the longitude, latitude, altitude, and when images were taken of places from around the world.

Find coordinates of a location

Use Google Earth to look up the longitude (east-west position) and latitude (north-south position) coordinates of a location.

  1. On your computer, open Google Earth.
  2. On the left, click Search.
  3. Search for a place. A knowledge panel will open with information about the place.
  4. Click Save to project to save the place.
  5. In the resulting window, click More settings.
  6. In the box that appears, find the longitude and latitude coordinates.

Use coordinates to find a place

You can use the coordinates of a place to find its location on Google Earth.

  1. On your computer, open Google Earth.
  2. On the left, click Search.
  3. Type the coordinates using one of these formats:
    • Decimal Degrees: 42.7°, -100.2°
    • Degrees, Minutes, Seconds: 64°25'12.07"N, 100°10'15.24"W

Choose coordinates format

  1. On your computer, open Google Earth.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Go to Formats and units.
  4. In the drop-down menu under "Latitude/Longitude formatting", choose Degrees, Minutes, Seconds, or Decimal.

Check the altitude of a place

  1. Search for a place, or adjust Google Earth until you find the correct location.
  2. At the bottom right find the real-world altitude and the altitude of the camera. If you move the mouse to hover over different locations, the altitude updates.

Choose a unit of measurement for altitude

  1. On your computer, open Google Earth.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Go to Formats and units.
  4. In the drop-down menu under "Latitude/Longitude formatting", choose Degrees, Minutes, Seconds, or Decimal.
