Get started with data layers in Google Earth

Google Earth's catalog of data layers helps you find and add valuable geospatial data directly to your projects. Access public and authoritative data layers to enhance your maps and analysis.

Open and browse available data layers on Google Earth

  1. Open an existing project or create a new one in Google Earth.
    1. You can also access the data layers from the Explore Earth mode, but you'll be asked to create or select a project prior to adding it to the map.
  2. In the toolbar, click the Add data layer button to see the available layers.
  3. Scroll through the list to see all available layers.
  4. For more details on a layer, click the More info button on the layer card. This opens the layer's detail view, showing information like description, data sources, and coverage.
  5. Click Back in the top left to return to the layer list view.

Add a data layer to your project

  1. In the data catalog, find the layer you want to add.
  2. From the layer list view, click Select on the layer you want to add.

    1. Alternatively, from the layer's detail view, click Select, and then click Back in the top left to return to the layer list view.

View data tables

  1. From the Map contents list, select the data layer you want to explore to open an inspector panel on the right side of the screen.
  2. In the inspector panel, select the table Data table button. A detailed data table opens at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Scroll through the data.

Important notes:

  • When you zoom out, some data might be hidden in both the map and the table. To see all relevant features, zoom into the area you want to explore.
  • The table stops updating when you change the heading of the map or switch to 3D view. To update the table, switch back to 2D view and orient your map's heading back to north.
