To discover how images\nhave changed over time or view past versions of a map on a timeline:\n\n1. On your device, open [Google\n Earth](https://earth.google.com/).\n2. [Search for places](/maps/documentation/earth/search-for-places).\n3. To view a map over time, you can either:\n\n - In the toolbar, click **Historical imagery**.\n - Click **View** \\\u003e **Historical imagery**.\n\n | **Note:** This feature isn't available if you're using the **Map** basemap. To enable this feature, change your basemap to **Satellite**.\n4. Select how you want to view the map.\n\n - **To turn on historical imagery view**, at the top left, click Historical imagery.\n - **To turn on timelapse** , at the top left, click history **Timelapse**.\n5. A timeline appears. At the top right, click the timeline to explore the map\n over time.\n\n - **To find a specific time**, you can either:\n - Click the year you want to view in the timeline.\n - Click chevron_left **Previous** or chevron_right **Next**.\n - **To lock the latest imagery** , click last_page **Last page**.\n - **To minimize the historical imagery toolbar** , at the top right, click collapse_content **Collapse**.\n - At the top left, the toolbar remains active as a floating chip.\n6. To deactivate historical imagery, click **Historical imagery**.\n\n**Tips:**\n\n- To optimize your viewing experience, 3D buildings feature is turned off when historical imagery is turned on.\n- Satellite image availability is represented on the slider.\n- Image availability may change as you explore.\n- Years are marked by dots.
