Weather forecast mode in Google Earth on web provides temperature and precipitation forecasts that can be overlaid directly over map and satellite basemap views.
Weather forecasts in Google Earth include the following capabilities:
- AI-powered forecasting: Visualizes 15-day ensemble predictions generated by Google's AI models. Coverage varies by region.
- Forecast duration and granularity: Provides up to 15 days of atmospheric forecast data mapped at 6-hour time intervals.
- Basemap compatibility: Global forecast overlays available in both map and satellite basemap views.
Temperature (15-day forecast)
Global predictions for surface air temperature (°C), measured 2 meters above the Earth's surface. Generated by Google's leading AI models, the forecast is trained directly on sparse weather station observations to calibrate predictions against actual ground-level measurements. Temperature forecasts include 6-hour intervals over a maximum of 15 days at a spatial resolution of 5 kilometers.
Precipitation (15-day forecast)
Global predictions for liquid precipitation accumulation in millimeters. Generated by Google's leading AI models, the forecast is trained directly on high-fidelity precipitation observations, including NASA's IMERG satellite retrievals and satellite radar precipitation reanalysis. Precipitation forecasts include 6-hour intervals over a maximum of 15 days at a spatial resolution of 11 kilometers.
Activate weather forecast mode
You can activate the weather forecast mode in Google Earth using any of the following entry points:
- Click partly_cloudy_day Show/Hide weather forecast in the top navigation bar.
- Toggle Weather forecast on or off within the Basemap settings menu.
- Select partly_cloudy_day Show/Hide weather forecast from the View menu.
Navigate between weather data and map controls
- Switch between temperature and precipitation: Use the drop-down menu to switch between temperature and precipitation forecasts.
- Animation toolbar: Use the play and pause controls, timeline scrubber, and step buttons to move forward or backward in 6-hour intervals.
- Auto-pause: Animation playback automatically pauses whenever you click the map canvas or jump timeline frames.
- Layer opacity: Adjust the transparency slider in the weather settings controls to change the visibility of the weather overlay.
- Layer ordering: Point and line project elements are displayed on top of weather layers, while choropleth layers are rendered behind weather layers.
Inspect specific locations and ensemble charts
To inspect weather data for a specific location, do the following:
- Click a location on the map.
- When you click a location, an inspector panel opens and displays the
following:
- Point metrics and corresponding timestamps.
- A static line chart illustrating visual probability curves for Most
Likely, P10, and P90 scenarios.
- P90 (90th percentile): Higher end of the likely range. Only about 1 in 10 ensemble forecasts exceed this value.
- P10 (10th percentile): Lower end of the likely range. Only about 1 in 10 ensemble forecasts fall below this value.
Set units of measurement
Weather metrics dynamically align with your Google Earth general settings:
- Temperature: Uses the temperature scale setting (°C or °F).
- Precipitation (accumulation): Uses the primary unit system setting (millimeters / °C for metric, inches / °F for imperial).
