Set up Content API access


To use the Content API for Shopping with a given Merchant Center account, you must set up an API Console project. This project lets you manage the API access and authentication methods for your Content API solution. This section will point you at appropriate documentation of this process based on your particular use case.

Manual steps

We have different documentation for the different types of authentication you can set up for your Content API use. The main difference between the authentication types is whether you plan to only access your own Merchant Center information, or whether you plan to access Merchant Center accounts owned by others.

  1. If you only plan on accessing your account (and sub-accounts, if using a multi-client account), then we suggest using service accounts. The Get Started guide includes steps on creating a service account from within the Merchant Center.
  2. If you plan to manage other Merchant Center accounts as a third-party, see the OAuth2 Client guide.

Once you have the appropriate authentication tokens, you can test your authentication setup by using the Shopping samples, which support both service account and OAuth2 client authentication. These samples use the Content API client libraries, which we recommend using in your own applications if you are using a supported language. Otherwise, you can use the REST API directly.
