Page Summary
-
This example demonstrates how to add custom shapes to a Google Map using the data layer and GeoJSON data.
-
It showcases styling these shapes by setting fill color and stroke width using
map.data.setStyle(). -
The sample provides code snippets in TypeScript, JavaScript, CSS, and HTML to illustrate the implementation.
-
Users can interact with a live example through provided links to JSFiddle and Google Cloud Shell.
-
Instructions for cloning and running the sample locally using Git and Node.js are included.
This example uses the data layer to add some custom shapes to a map, and shows how to apply styles to those shapes

TypeScript
async function init() { const [{ event }] = await Promise.all([ google.maps.importLibrary('core'), google.maps.importLibrary('maps'), ]); const mapElement = document.querySelector('gmp-map')!; const innerMap = mapElement.innerMap; // Load GeoJSON. event.addListenerOnce(innerMap, 'idle', () => { innerMap.data.loadGeoJson('google.json'); }); // Set the stroke width, and fill color for each polygon innerMap.data.setStyle({ fillColor: 'green', strokeWeight: 1, }); } void init();
JavaScript
async function init() { const [{ event }] = await Promise.all([ google.maps.importLibrary('core'), google.maps.importLibrary('maps'), ]); const mapElement = document.querySelector('gmp-map'); const innerMap = mapElement.innerMap; // Load GeoJSON. event.addListenerOnce(innerMap, 'idle', () => { innerMap.data.loadGeoJson('google.json'); }); // Set the stroke width, and fill color for each polygon innerMap.data.setStyle({ fillColor: 'green', strokeWeight: 1, }); } void init();
CSS
/* * Always set the map height explicitly to define the size of the div element * that contains the map. */ gmp-map { height: 100%; } /* * Optional: Makes the sample page fill the window. */ html, body { height: 100%; margin: 0; padding: 0; }

Git and Node.js are required to run this sample locally. Follow these instructions to install Node.js and NPM. You will also need a Google Maps API key.
The following commands clone the repository, install dependencies, and copy the environment file.
git clone https://github.com/googlemaps-samples/js-api-samples.gitcd js-api-samplesnpm icp .env.template .env
Once you copy the environment file, make sure to open the .env file and replace <Insert your own development API key here> with your actual API key before starting the sample.
cd samples/layer-data-stylenpm start
