Page Summary
-
This example demonstrates capturing the latitude and longitude coordinates of a user's click on a Google Map.
-
It uses an
InfoWindowto display the coordinates on the map at the clicked location. -
The example code is provided in both TypeScript and JavaScript, along with HTML and CSS for creating the map display.
-
Users can try the sample directly in JSFiddle or Google Cloud Shell, and can also clone the sample code to run it locally.
This example listens for the click event, gets the latitude and longitude
coordinates of the click from google.maps.MapMouseEvent.latLng, and displays
those coordinates in an info window.

TypeScript
async function init() { // Request needed libraries. const { InfoWindow } = await google.maps.importLibrary('maps'); // Set up the map. const mapElement = document.querySelector('gmp-map')!; const innerMap = mapElement.innerMap; // Get the initial center of the map. const position = innerMap.getCenter(); // Create the initial InfoWindow. let infoWindow = new InfoWindow({ content: 'Click the map to get Lat/Lng!', position, }); infoWindow.open(innerMap); // Configure the click listener. innerMap.addListener( 'click', (mapsMouseEvent: google.maps.MapMouseEvent) => { // Close the current InfoWindow. infoWindow.close(); // Create a new InfoWindow. infoWindow = new InfoWindow({ position: mapsMouseEvent.latLng, }); infoWindow.setContent( JSON.stringify(mapsMouseEvent.latLng!.toJSON(), null, 2) ); infoWindow.open(innerMap); } ); } void init();

Git and Node.js are required to run this sample locally. Follow these instructions to install Node.js and NPM. You will also need a Google Maps API key.
The following commands clone the repository, install dependencies, and copy the environment file.
git clone https://github.com/googlemaps-samples/js-api-samples.gitcd js-api-samplesnpm icp .env.template .env
Once you copy the environment file, make sure to open the .env file and replace <Insert your own development API key here> with your actual API key before starting the sample.
cd samples/event-click-latlngnpm start
