Page Summary
-
This example demonstrates how to create a clickable map that places a marker at the clicked location.
-
When a user clicks on the map, a marker is added and the map view is centered on that point.
-
It utilizes the Google Maps JavaScript API's event listeners to handle user interactions.
-
The sample code is provided in both TypeScript and JavaScript for flexibility.
-
The HTML, CSS and Javascript code are provided to facilitate implementing this feature on a webpage.
This example creates a map that the user can click to create a marker at the clicked point.

TypeScript
async function init() { // Request needed libraries. const [{ AdvancedMarkerElement }] = await Promise.all([ google.maps.importLibrary('marker'), google.maps.importLibrary('maps'), ]); const mapElement = document.querySelector('gmp-map')!; const innerMap = mapElement.innerMap; innerMap.addListener('click', (event: google.maps.MapMouseEvent) => { if (!event.latLng) return; new AdvancedMarkerElement({ position: event.latLng, map: innerMap, }); innerMap.panTo(event.latLng); }); } void init();
JavaScript
async function init() { // Request needed libraries. const [{ AdvancedMarkerElement }] = await Promise.all([ google.maps.importLibrary('marker'), google.maps.importLibrary('maps'), ]); const mapElement = document.querySelector('gmp-map'); const innerMap = mapElement.innerMap; innerMap.addListener('click', (event) => { if (!event.latLng) return; new AdvancedMarkerElement({ position: event.latLng, map: innerMap, }); innerMap.panTo(event.latLng); }); } void init();

Git and Node.js are required to run this sample locally. Follow these instructions to install Node.js and NPM. You will also need a Google Maps API key.
The following commands clone the repository, install dependencies, and copy the environment file.
git clone https://github.com/googlemaps-samples/js-api-samples.gitcd js-api-samplesnpm icp .env.template .env
Once you copy the environment file, make sure to open the .env file and replace <Insert your own development API key here> with your actual API key before starting the sample.
cd samples/event-argumentsnpm start
