Add an advanced marker

  • This example demonstrates how to add an advanced marker to a map using the AdvancedMarkerElement class from the Google Maps JavaScript API.

  • The code imports the necessary libraries, initializes a map centered on specific coordinates, and then creates and places an advanced marker at the same location.

  • Included are code snippets in TypeScript, JavaScript, CSS, and HTML for a complete implementation of this feature.

  • You can explore the sample further through provided links for documentation, a live demo (JSFiddle), and instructions for running it locally using Git and Node.js.

This example shows creating a new AdvancedMarkerElement to add an advanced marker to a map.

Read the documentation.

TypeScript

const mapElement = document.querySelector('gmp-map')!;

async function init() {
    // Request needed libraries.
    const [{ AdvancedMarkerElement }] = await Promise.all([
        google.maps.importLibrary('marker'),
        google.maps.importLibrary('maps'),
    ]);

    const marker = new AdvancedMarkerElement({
        position: { lat: 37.4239163, lng: -122.0947209 },
    });
    mapElement.append(marker);
}
void init();

JavaScript

const mapElement = document.querySelector('gmp-map');

async function init() {
    // Request needed libraries.
    const [{ AdvancedMarkerElement }] = await Promise.all([
        google.maps.importLibrary('marker'),
        google.maps.importLibrary('maps'),
    ]);

    const marker = new AdvancedMarkerElement({
        position: { lat: 37.4239163, lng: -122.0947209 },
    });
    mapElement.append(marker);
}
void init();

CSS

/*
 * Always set the map height explicitly to define the size of the div element
 * that contains the map.
 */
gmp-map {
    height: 100%;
}

/*
 * Optional: Makes the sample page fill the window.
 */
html,
body {
    height: 100%;
    margin: 0;
    padding: 0;
}

HTML

<html>
    <head>
        <title>Default Advanced Marker</title>

        <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="./style.css" />
        <script type="module" src="./index.js"></script>

        </script>
    </head>
    <body>
        <gmp-map
            center="37.4239163,-122.0947209"

Clone Sample

Git and Node.js are required to run this sample locally. Follow these instructions to install Node.js and NPM. You will also need a Google Maps API key.

The following commands clone the repository, install dependencies, and copy the environment file.

  git clone https://github.com/googlemaps-samples/js-api-samples.git
  cd js-api-samples
  npm i
  cp .env.template .env

Once you copy the environment file, make sure to open the .env file and replace <Insert your own development API key here> with your actual API key before starting the sample.

  cd samples/advanced-markers-simple
  npm start
