This document summarizes answers to questions we expect developers will have about the Actions on Google Challenge. You should also read the Official Rules. We've tried to make this FAQ accurate, but if there's any difference between this FAQ and the Official Rules, the Official Rules control.
What is the Google Assistant?
The Google Assistant is your own personal Google. It's one Assistant that's ready to help you get things done, no matter where you are or what device you're using. With the Google Assistant, you can have a natural conversation and ask questions, take actions and more.
What is Actions on Google?
Actions on Google is the platform that allows developers to build for the Google Assistant on Google Home, eligible Android phones, iPhones, and soon everywhere else the Assistant is available.
What is the judging criteria?
Judges will evaluate and score each app based on creativity, relevance, quality, and usage.
Who are the judges?
Entries will be judged by members of the Google Assistant team including engineers, product managers and UX specialists.
What are the deadlines for the challenge?
You need to have your app approved by August 31, 2017. It can take a few submissions before an app is approved, so try to submit your app early.
I submitted my app, can I make changes to it?
Yes, but we can not guarantee that any update you make after August 31, 2017 will be taken into account for the judging.
How long does it take to get my app approved?
On average, developers submit their app a few times before it gets approved. We recommend submitting your first version as soon as possible so you can get feedback and make necessary changes before the deadline.
How will winners be selected?
Each app will be evaluated by the judges based on the following criteria:
Creativity - How new or original is your app ?
Relevance - Does your app serve a user need?
Quality - How well does your app provide a good user experience and follow our design best practices, as outlined here?
Usage - How many users has your app acquired and how much are they using it?
When will winners be selected?
Winners will be selected and notified later this year.
Yes! You can submit up to 3 different apps for the Assistant, as long as they are sufficiently differentiated experiences.
Who is eligible to participate?
Participants must: (1) Be of legal majority age in the country, state, province or jurisdiction of residence (2) Not be a resident of Italy, Brazil, Quebec, Crimea, Cuba, Iran, Syria, North Korea, or Sudan. Read the terms for complete eligibility requirements.
Is the competition open to all countries?
This challenge is open to all countries with the exception of Italy, Brazil, Quebec, Crimea, Cuba, Iran, Syria, North Korea, or Sudan
Do I have to use API.AI?
Nope, but it is a great development platform that is tightly integrated with Actions on Google - so give it a try :)
I'm a highschool student, will I be eligible for the student prize category?
Yes, as long as you are above the age of majority in the country, state, province or jurisdiction of residence
Can I join as a team?
Absolutely. Your team can have up to 3 people total.
Who owns the intellectual property (IP) for the submissions?
By submitting an app in this challenge, the entrant warrants and represents that (s)he owns all of the intellectual and industrial property rights in and to the app.
I already have an approved app, can I submit that for the challenge?
Unfortunately, no. Only new apps submitted for approval after May 17, 2017 are eligible.
Where can I find the "Project ID"?
Visit the Actions on Google console, then press the settings gear in the top left, and then "Project Settings". You will see your project ID listed.
Can I go back and edit my submission form?
No, unfortunately you cannot go back and edit your form once submitted. If you need to edit anything, you can re-submit the form and the most recent submission will be what we judge.
