Card Metadata Overview

Google Pay's goal is to provide an effortless, secure, and rewarding payment experience across Chrome and Android. In line with this objective, Google Pay has launched a new card art and product name feature for autofill on Chrome and Android.

Using this feature, users are shown card name and card art for eligible payment cards in the autofill drop-down on websites and apps. This makes it easier for users to identify their payment cards and helps to ensure that they select the best card for each purchase. This enhancement extends the existing look and feel of the Google Wallet app.

We use Visa and Mastercard's existing APIs to deliver this enhancement to users. Hence, issuers don't need to make any technical changes to enable this service. However, as a best practice, we encourage issuers to provide us with up-to-date card product names and card art images. This is an existing requirement as part of the Mastercard Digital Enablement Service (MDES) and Visa Token Service (VTS) programs.

For questions related to an issuer's card product name or card art accuracy, we recommend to verify the accuracy of the card metadata with your network partner. They can then escalate any requests for updates to their partner relationship manager.

Benefits (US only)

Google is expanding its card metadata in autofill feature across the US, starting with flat-rate card benefits. This decision follows successful pilot programs and user research, which identified the card product benefits and rewards as Chrome autofill users' top request.

Frequently asked questions

  • How does Google source the card benefits data?
  • Google uses public card product benefits information published by card issuers.

  • Can issuers verify benefits data in advance? What controls are in place to ensure accuracy?
  • We conduct a thorough audit of card benefits prior to launch, followed by regular audits on an ongoing basis. If an issuer wants to make a correction to the listed benefits, they can make a support request on the Google Pay developer site.

  • What kind of card benefits are displayed?
  • At this time, autofill displays a limited selection of benefits, focused on cases where a card grants a specific benefit when purchasing a product, such as X% cashback or Y points on all purchases.

  • How frequently is the benefits data refreshed or checked for accuracy?
  • Card product benefits are updated on an ongoing basis.

  • Does having benefit metadata impact card ranking?
  • No, whether a card displays benefit information isn't a factor in a user's autofill rank order.

  • Where does the "Terms apply" link go?
  • The link typically directs users to the issuer's product webpage.

  • Where does the "Learn more" link in the payment methods section go?

The Learn more link directs users to the feature's Google Help Center article and FAQ.

  • Is benefit information displayed on sensitive sites, where benefits aren't eligible?
  • Google doesn't have information about the specific merchants' eligibility for specific benefits or rewards. However, we've chosen to prevent benefits from displaying on certain sensitive sites based on traffic volume.

  • How can users opt-out of this experience?
  • Yes, users can turn off benefits through the Settings > Autofill and Passwords > Payment Methods > Turn off Benefits.
