Picasa API Deprecation

The Picasa Web Albums Data API is being deprecated as of January 2019.

Existing Picasa Web Albums Data API client applications will continue to work normally until January 2019.

Timeline

March 2019 The Picasa Web Albums Data API is shut down. No further extensions are available.

Details

The Picasa Web Albums Data API will be shut down, including all the end-points and the associated OAuth scopes.

The following OAuth 2.0 scopes will cease to function, including both the HTTPS and HTTP scopes:

  • https://picasaweb.google.com/data
  • https://photos.googleapis.com/data
  • https://www.googleapis.com/auth/photos
  • https://www.googleapis.com/auth/photos.upload
  • https://www.googleapis.com/auth/picasa

The Picasa Slideshow Widget will also be turned off.

Migration

To continue operating, applications using Picasa Web Albums Data API should migrate to Google Photos Library API .

Extension

To access the API during the extension period, between January 2019 and March 2019, you can specify a flag as part of your requests to the Picasa Web Albums Data API. Append the query parameter deprecation-extension=true to the URL of your requests.

Here is an example:

GET https://picasaweb.google.com/data/feed/api/user/userID?deprecation-extension=true

Alternatively, you can also specify the deprecation-extension:true parameter in the header of your requests:

"deprecation-extension": "true"

This flag will not work after the extension period and all requests to the API will fail.
