MODIS Combined 16-Day NDSI

  • The MODIS/MCD43A4_006_NDSI dataset provides daily, global Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI) values, derived from MODIS surface reflectance data.

  • NDSI helps identify snow cover by comparing reflectance in the visible and mid-infrared spectrum, ranging from -1.0 to 1.0.

  • This dataset is freely available for use, sale, and redistribution with no restrictions.

  • The data is provided by Google Earth Engine and covers the period from February 24, 2000, to February 10, 2023.

  • Users can explore and analyze the dataset using Earth Engine's platform, which is free for research, education, and non-profit purposes.

Description

The Normalized Difference Snow Index is used to identify snow, based on its characteristically higher reflectance in the visible portion of the spectrum compared to the mid-IR. NDSI is computed using the Green and Mid-IR bands, and has a range of -1.0 to 1.0. See Riggs et al. (1994) for details. This product is generated from the MODIS/006/MCD43A4 surface reflectance composites.
