September 2013 release

This September 2013 Stable channel release of the Hangouts API enables apps to blur the background in the video feed of the local participant in a Hangout or replace the background with an arbitrary image from the web.

Background blur

Background blur enables apps to blur the background in the video feed of the local participant in a Hangout. The following API elements have been added to the gapi.hangout.av.effects namespace.

For sample code that demonstrates both blur and replacement features, see the Background Replacement App.

Background replacement

Background replacement enables apps to replace the background of the video feed of the local participant with an arbitrary image from the web. Background replacement sets alpha values of background pixels of the video feed to blend with the new background image. The following API elements have been added to the gapi.hangout.av.effects namespace.

For sample code that demonstrates both blur and replacement features, see the Background Replacement App.

May 2013 release

This May 2013 Stable channel release of the Hangouts API enables apps to autoload when Hangouts start, mute the sound for notifications, and set the broadcast video screen to show or not show the filmstrip of participants.

Autoloading an app

Allows a Hangout app to set itself to be autoloaded for a user at the beginning of all Hangouts. This should only be done via a user action, such as a checkbox in a settings dialog box, rather than be done automatically. The user will be notified and given a chance to cancel when an app sets itself to autoload.

Muting sound for notifications

Mutes the sound for the local participant for all notifications, for example, the sound played when someone enters or leaves a Hangout.

Allows the broadcaster to mute the sound for notifications for all participants in a Hangout On Air.

Show or hide filmstrip in broadcast video

Changes the view of the broadcast video in a Hangout On Air so that either no filmstrip is shown, the filmstrip is always shown, or the filmstrip switches automatically to be hidden when there is only one camera.
