Make a space discoverable to a target audience

This page explains how to use the AccessSettings field on the Space resource of the Google Chat API to make a space discoverable to a target audience.

To make a space discoverable for a target audience, set up and add a target audience instead of inviting users individually. Target audiences are groups of people—such as departments or the entire company—that you can share your Chat space with, to improve Chat space awareness and shareability. For more information, see About target audiences and Set up sharing in Chat.

Use the target audience ID, TARGET_AUDIENCE_ID, to create a space, set up a space, or update a space that's discoverable by users who are part of that target audience by specifying audiences/TARGET_AUDIENCE_ID in the AccessSettings field of a Space resource.

You must be signed in using an account with super administrator privileges to obtain a target audience ID:

  1. In the Google Admin console, go to Menu > Directory > Target audiences.

    Go to Target audiences

  2. If you haven't already created a target audience, see Create a target audience.

  3. In the Target audiences list, click the name of the target audience.

  4. In the target audience URL, copy the ID:

  5. You can only use the target audiences that are configured for use with Chat. To verify, in the Google Admin console, go to Menu > Apps > Google Workspace > Google Chat > Sharing settings.

    Go to Sharing settings

    1. If the target audience name isn't listed, click Edit.
    2. Click Add target audiences.
    3. Select the target audience, and then click Save.
    4. In the Sharing Settings window, click Save.
