What is the Realtime API?

The Realtime API provides collaboration as a service. It allows you to develop rich, multi-user applications with realtime collaboration like that found in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides.

How does the Realtime API relate to the Google Drive API?

Realtime documents are stored in Google Drive. You use the core Drive API for creating files, working with binary content, setting metadata like the title, and sharing.

Do my users need Google accounts?

To enable full collaboration, each user must have a Google account. You can use the API in in-memory mode for users without a Google account.

Does the Realtime API support anonymous access?

Not by default. You could provide a snapshot view of the contents for anonymous users using an exported document with in memory mode.

Does the Realtime API support languages or platforms other than JavaScript?

The core Realtime API is available only in Javascript. The import/export APIs are standard REST APIs accessible from any platform.
