MODIS Aqua Daily NDSI

  • The MODIS/MYD09GA_006_NDSI dataset provides daily Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI) values globally from July 4, 2002, to February 25, 2023.

  • NDSI, derived from MODIS surface reflectance, helps identify snow cover by comparing reflectance in the visible and mid-infrared spectrum, with values ranging from -1.0 to 1.0.

  • The dataset is freely available for use, sale, and redistribution through Google Earth Engine, a platform for geospatial data analysis and visualization.

  • This dataset is provided by Google and is part of the MODIS Aqua collection, offering a 463.313-meter pixel resolution.

Description

The Normalized Difference Snow Index is used to identify snow, based on its characteristically higher reflectance in the visible portion of the spectrum compared to the mid-IR. NDSI is computed using the Green and Mid-IR bands, and has a range of -1.0 to 1.0. See Riggs et al. (1994) for details. This product is generated from the MODIS/006/MYD09GA surface reflectance composites.
