When you refer to a particular word or phrase as the word or phrase itself, use italics. For other uses of italics, see guidance about text formatting.

Recommended: Don't use & (ampersand) as a conjunction. Use the word and instead.

When you need to refer to letters as letters, use italics.

Recommended: To form a possessive of a singular noun, add 's to the end of the word.

Not recommended: To form a possessive of a singular noun, add "'s" to the end of the word.
