O WebP é um formato de imagem moderno que oferece compactação sem perda e
com perda superior para imagens na Web. Com o WebP, webmasters e desenvolvedores da Web
podem criar imagens menores e mais detalhadas que tornam a Web mais rápida.
As imagens WebP sem perda são 26% menores que as PNGs. Imagens WebP
com perda são 25% a 34% menores que as imagens JPEG semelhantes com índice de qualidade
SSIM (link em inglês) equivalente.
O WebP sem perda oferece suporte a transparência (também conhecida como canal Alfa) a um
custo de apenas 22% de bytes adicionais. Para os casos em que a compactação RGB com perda
é aceitável, o WebP com perda também oferece suporte à transparência, normalmente fornecendo
tamanhos de arquivo três vezes menores em comparação com o PNG.
Imagens WebP animadas com perdas, sem perdas e transparência têm suporte,
o que pode reduzir o tamanho em comparação com GIF e APNG.
A compactação WebP com perda usa a codificação preditiva para codificar uma imagem, o mesmo
método usado pelo codec de vídeo VP8 para compactar keyframes em vídeos. A codificação
preditiva usa os valores em blocos de pixels vizinhos para prever os valores
em um bloco e codificar apenas a diferença.
A compactação WebP sem perdas usa fragmentos de imagem já vistos para
reconstruir exatamente novos pixels. Ele também pode usar uma paleta local se nenhuma
cor correspondente for encontrada.
