August 17, 2017: Final Code Submission and Evaluations Start next Week

You've made it to the final weeks of GSoC 2017! You should be finishing up the coding on your project and working with your mentor to meet their submission requirements well before the August 29th 16:00 UTC Final Evaluation deadline.

Be sure to follow these 3 final steps (in order) before August 29th at 16:00 UTC. Start now! Don't wait until the last minute. This will take you awhile to complete all 3 steps.

  1. Read the Work Product Submission Guidelines
  2. Discuss with your mentor how you will submit your work and send them a preview as soon as possible.

This is important because if your link is broken (not pointing to the correct code, etc.) you will have time to fix it before you submit your Final Evaluation. You don’t want to submit a bad link and fail GSoC because of it.

Do not miss the deadline because you haven’t heard back from your mentor after submitting a preview. If you do not hear back from your mentor by August 28th at 23:00 UTC submit your evaluation anyway. A missed evaluation means an automatic fail.

  3. Submit your Final Evaluation before August 29th at 16:00 UTC.

From your dashboard you will be able to access the Final Evaluation starting August 21st at 16:00 UTC. Just like the 1st and 2nd Evaluations, this is a required part of your GSoC participation. The first question asks you to submit the URL pointing to your Work Product for GSoC 2017. This will be shown to your mentor to use in their final evaluation decision and will be displayed on the public GSoC site of successful projects. You can preview the final evaluation questions here.

Important Upcoming Deadlines

  • August 21-29: Scrub your code, write documentation, submit your mentor evaluations
  • August 29 16:00 UTC: Deadline to submit your code and your evaluation of your mentor. Do not wait until the last minute to submit, be sure to communicate with your mentor as they will likely require you to merge your code sooner than this deadline so they can evaluate your work.
  • September 1: Deadline to update your shipping address on the program site
  • September 6: Successful student projects announced

Remember Final Evaluations open up for students on August 21st at 16:00 UTC and the deadline to submit your Final Evaluation is August 29th at 16:00 UTC. And the final evaluation is not just an evaluation of your mentor, you must include a URL to the work you have produced in GSoC - be sure to read the Work Product Submission Guidelines thoroughly for the details.

Mentor evaluations of students begin August 29.
  • September 1: Deadline to update your shipping address on the program site (remember, if you live in a restricted country you can ship your package to a friend or family member in a non-restricted country but you must update the shipping profile before September 1st)

Payoneer Frequently Asked Questions

I registered for a Payoneer account using the link you sent but I don’t know if my account is okay. How can I tell?

Please log into your Payoneer account and verify your account is active and linked to the Google Summer of Code program by looking at the Funding Sources section from your Dashboard. Contact Payoneer directly if you have any doubt about the status or accuracy of your account.

I won’t be able to complete my Payoneer registration by June 15th. What does that mean for me?

Your payment(s) will be delayed. We can’t put funds into an account that doesn’t exist. How long it will be delayed depends on how long it takes you to complete your registration and have it approved by Payoneer. The approval from Payoneer usually takes 3-7 business days if you submit the correct documents.

I received a link from Payoneer instructing me to complete a US tax form.

  • What happens if I haven’t completed the tax form by June 15th?

Your payment will be delayed. We can’t pay you until you complete the required tax form.

  • I don’t think I am required to complete a US tax form, what do I do?

Contact gsoc-support@google.com and explain why you don’t think you need to complete the form.

I am a US citizen and am attending a school outside the US and did not receive the tax form link from Payoneer. What do I do?

Contact gsoc-support@google.com and we will be sure Payoneer sends a link to the tax form to you.

I want to change the account details on my Payoneer account, how do I do that?

Any changes related to your Payoneer account should be made directly on your dashboard in Payoneer. If needed, please reach out to Payoneer directly by using their their website or by calling them. If you are calling from within the United States, dial 1-800-251-2521. If you are calling from outside the United States, dial 1-646-658-3695.

May 14, 2017: Student Week 2 Important Info

We hope your first week and a half as a GSoC 2017 student has been fun and exciting. By now you should have been contacted by your Mentor and are learning more about your community and the codebase, reading documentation and working on your project plan for the summer.

Payoneer

  • We have updated the Payoneer / Student Payment Information page with answers to more frequently asked questions. For students in India there is a field asking for "Purpose Code": If you haven't already completed your registration please use P1009 -- Architectural Services. If you have already registered and used a different code, that's okay, no need to change it.
  • Many non-US based students ask us if it is better to receive funds in your local currency or in USD. Our experience is that your local currency is preferable because Payoneer's exchange fees are often better than what your local bank may charge. Google covers a majority of the other fees around your cards or bank transfers, but does not cover currency exchange fees. Every bank is different, which makes it difficult for Google or Payoneer to provide a specific estimate of which method is better.
  • After you submit your Payoneer registration it will usually take 1-4 business days to receive an approval email from Payoneer saying "Congratulations - your Payoneer account application has been approved!" If you are subject to US taxes, you may receive a request to fill out tax forms after approval. See below for more information.

If you have questions about your Payoneer account you must reach out to Payoneer directly using their their website or by calling them. If you are calling from within the United States, dial 1-800-251-2521. If you are calling from outside the United States, dial 1-646-658-3695.

Payoneer will respond to your inquiries within a couple of business days (usually earlier). Please be patient.

CPT Letters

If you require a CPT letter please be advised that we can not alter the dates to anything other than what the official coding dates are: May 30 - August 21.

The first group of CPT letters we sent included the community bonding period and the final evaluation period: May 4 - August 29. If you need your form updated to reflect the May 30 - August 21 dates please submit a new request (only do this if the original letter isn't accepted by your school).

Do not ask us to move the end date earlier in August. It is up to you to determine whether your school will accept the coding dates that you agreed to upon registration. If you are unable to work due to the specifications of your F1 or J1 visa during these dates then you will need to discuss with your school what that means for you (options may include: not accepting any payment, withdrawing from the program, etc.).

Do not request a CPT letter just to get proof you were accepted into the program. We will send out a letter stating you were accepted into the program in the next week.

Tax Forms

If you are a US citizen, US green card holder, US resident, in the US on a visa, or physically present in the US during the GSoC coding period, you must submit a United States tax form to receive your stipend.

For all non-US students or residents, if you do not meet any of the criteria listed above then you are not required to complete a US tax form from Payoneer.

Tax forms requests will be sent automatically to those students attending US universities and those with a home address in the US. These tax forms will be emailed to you by Payoneer within 10 days of your account being approved by Payoneer.

If your university is not in the US and your home address is not in the US but you believe you are still required to complete a US tax form then please email gsoc-support@google.com and a tax form request will be emailed to you.

You must complete the tax form via the Payoneer site before June 15th, 2017 to receive your first payment on time.

It is your responsibility to consult with a tax professional if you have questions about how any money received from Google Summer of Code will impact you.

GSoC Student Mailing List

We have added everyone who opted in to the GSoC Student List. Please remember that this list is for past and present students only. There are over 6700 people on the list so please use it for questions you feel may be helpful to all students - not questions that are specific to you (updating your shipping address, your Payoneer account, etc.)
