Get Started with Google Maps Platform

Google Maps Platform is a set of APIs and SDKs that are managed from the Google Cloud Platform Console. To use Google Maps Platform you need a billing account, a project, one or more enabled APIs or SDKs, and a restricted API key for use with apps and requests. To accomplish this:

All users are eligible for the Google Cloud Platform and Google Maps Platform billing account credits. Make sure you understand how these credits work.

Get Started

To sign up and get started, new users should click the button below. You will be guided to (1) pick one or more products, (2) select or create a project, (3) set up a billing account, and (4) enable the APIs and SDKs associated with the products you picked. At the end of the process, an API key will be created for you. To restrict the API key using the console, see Restrict an API key.

Get Started

Next steps

Once you are signed up, you can begin using the Google Maps Platform APIs and SDKs. To learn more, see the Overview, Developer, and Get Started guides for the specific API or SDK you are interested in. The APIs and SDKs are listed at Google Maps Platform Documentation (by product) and Google Maps Platform APIs (by platform).

Setup Procedures

As you continue developing your first project or start new projects, you may need to perform one or more setup procedures. Existing users can perform any of the following procedures using the console:

Create a billing account

To use Google Maps Platform, you must have a billing account. If you signed up using the Get Started button, a billing account was created for you (and you can attach this billing account to multiple projects). You can also create a billing account using the console.

To create a billing account:

  1. Go to the Google Cloud Platform Console.
  2. From the Navigation menu select Billing.
  3. On the Billing page, under Manage billing accounts, follow the instructions to create an account.

Create a project and attach a billing account

To use Google Maps Platform, you must have a project with a billing account attached. The project is the basis for managing services, credentials, billing, APIs, and SDKs. The billing account is used to track costs associated with your project.

To create a project and attach a billing account:

  1. Go to the Google Cloud Platform Console.
  2. In the upper navigation bar click the project name, and then click NEW PROJECT in the dialog that appears. On the New Project page, fill in the required information (steps 3-7 below).
  3. Project name: Accept the default or enter a customized name.
  4. Project ID: Accept the default or click EDIT to enter a customized ID.
    • The project ID cannot be changed after the project is created, so choose an ID that you'll be comfortable using for the lifetime of the project.
  5. Billing account: Select (attach) a billing account.
  6. Organization: If you have an organization you want to link your project to, select it here, otherwise choose "No organization".
  7. Location: Enter the name of a folder to store your project.
  8. Click CREATE

Enable one or more APIs or SDKs

To use Google Maps Platform, you must enable the APIs or SDKs you plan to use with your project. If you are not sure which APIs or SDKs to enable, try using the API Picker.

To enable one or more APIs or SDKs:

  1. Go to the Google Cloud Platform Console.
  2. From the Navigation menu select APIs & Services > Library.
  3. On the API Library page, to the right of the Maps heading, click VIEW ALL (15).
    • The 15 Google Maps Platform APIs and SDKs that you can enable are displayed.
  4. On the Maps page, click the API or SDK you want to enable.
    • Note: Enabling the Places API also enables the Places SDK for Android and Places SDK for iOS.
  5. Back on the API Library page, under the name of the API or SDK you selected:
    • If the button says ENABLE, click the button to enable the API or SDK.
    • If the button says MANAGE, the API or SDK is already enabled and you don't need to do anything further.
    • Note: Clicking either button will display the dashboard for the API or SDK. (Click the DISABLE button to disable the API or SDK at any time.)
  6. Repeat Steps 2-5 for each API or SDK you want to enable.

To view the APIs or SDKs you have enabled:

  1. Go to the Google Cloud Platform Console.
    • If you have enabled at least one API or SDK, APIs will appear in the left panel.
  2. Click APIs to view the APIs and SDKs:
    • Enabled APIs: These API or SDKs are enabled.
    • Additional APIs: These API or SDKs are not enabled.

Get an API key

To use Google Maps Platform you must get an API key. The API key is a unique identifier, included with apps or requests, that is used to authenticate requests associated with your project for usage and billing purposes.

To get an API key:

  1. Go to the Google Cloud Platform Console.
  2. From the upper navigation bar select the project to be used with the key.
  3. From the Navigation menu select APIs & Services > Credentials.
  4. On the Credentials page, click Create credentials and select API key.
    • The API key created dialog displays your API key (an encrypted string).
  5. Click CLOSE.
    • The new API key is listed on the Credentials page under API keys.

Restrict an API key

To use the Google Maps Platform we strongly recommend that you restrict your API key. Restrictions provide added security and help ensure only authorized requests and charges are made with your API key. There are two restrictions, which work together. You should set both:

  • Application restriction: Associates the API key with a specific site (IP address and web site) or platform (Android and iOS). You can select only one restriction from this category (see Google Maps Platform APIs by Platform and Which keys or credentials should I use for different Maps products?)
  • API restriction: Associates the API key with one or more APIs or SDKs. Requests to APIs or SDKs registered with the API key will be processed. Requests to APIs or SDKs not registered with the API key will fail. Make sure the API or SDK supports the application restriction.

To restrict an API key:

  1. In the table below, select an API or SDK to open the corresponding Get an API Key guide.
  2. Follow the instructions in the guide to restrict the API key.

Billing Account Credits

To offset initial usage costs, Google Cloud Platform offers a free trial and Google Maps Platform features a recurring monthly credit. These credits are automatically available when you sign up and create a billing account.
