Distributed Databases Panel: An Exploration of Approaches and Best Practices
Julia Ferraioli, Brian Dorsey, Chris Ramsdale, Tyler Hannan, Mike Miller, Will Shulman
Whether you’re building a game, a mobile app, or a social analytics service, your information needs to be highly available, stored safely, and able to grow as your user base explodes. Come to this session to learn how modern distributed databases address these needs. You’ll hear from a panel of four industry experts about their solutions for tackling this problem using Google’s infrastructure and have the opportunity to ask the panel questions about their experiences.
Julia Ferraioli is a Developer Advocate for Google Compute Engine, based in Seattle. She helps developers harness the power of Google's infrastructure to tackle their computationally intensive processes and jobs. She comes from an industrial background in software engineering, and an academic background in machine learning and assistive technology.
I'm a Developer Programs Engineer on the Google Developer Relations team. I help you build cool stuff with our APIs. I focus on our Cloud Platform, especially Compute Engine and Cloud Storage. I love Python and I've taught Python at the University of Washington & spoken at both PyCon US & PyCon Japan. I'm currently learning Go and enjoying it. 日本語も話せます。
Chris is a Product Manager for the Google Cloud Platform focused on Google App Engine and managed storage. Prior to joining the Cloud Platform team, Chris was a Product Manager for Google Web Toolkit and Dart.
Tyler Hannan is Director of Technical Marketing at Basho. Basho makes Riak, an open source, distributed database. Tyler’s career, regardless of industry (payments, retail, scientific imaging, government), has been focused on data...database administration, data warehousing, data science and now, distributed systems.
As chief scientist, Mike is responsible for developing and evangelizing Cloudant's technical vision, managing long-term product R&D, and directing special projects. While at MIT as a Postdoctoral Fellow, he co-founded Cloudant after cutting his teeth on petabyte-per-second problems at the Large Hadron Collider. Mike holds a B.S. in Physics and a B.A in Philosophy from Michigan State, a Ph.D. in Physics from Yale, and is an Affiliate Professor of Particle Physics at University of Washington.
Will is a technologist and entrepreneur with over 15 years of extensive experience in building innovative software platforms and products. Currently he is CEO and co-founder of MongoLab, the popular cloud database service for MongoDB. Will was previously CTO and co-founder of Merced Systems, a high-growth enterprise analytics software company serving Global 2000 customers in more than 20 countries worldwide (acquired by NICE Systems). Will holds a B.S. in Computer Science from Stanford University.
